A smart and detailed quarterly patchwork quilting magazine that quilters of all skill levels can be involved in. Perhaps semi-unique among other similar crafts magazines in that it offers sensational tips and help in teaching new techniques and skills and showing how to apply them among all manner of projects. Q&A’s and artists profiles are given prominence towards the rear of the title, but this is not a magazine that likes to waste space with a plethora of opinion pieces of image-heavy projects. Informative and seeking to drive knowledge of quilting into its readers beyond following an A-B-C guide to making things. Quilting Arts is a crafting magazine that wants to inspire and drive innovation alongside its delightful pre-made projects.

Published in the US, Quilting Arts Magazine is a technique-oriented title among crafts magazines. Unlike its partners-in-patchwork, Quilting Arts seamlessly melds quilting tutorials with its design work rather than taking pages up with unnecessarily large photos and designs that just drop readers in the deep end with the barest of help in sight. This does not mean that it is short on unique designs and patterns for both amateurs and experienced quilters to work on, far from it. It’s just that, rather than being heavy on flashy designs and sparse on detail, it successfully strikes a fair balance between the two.

Perhaps this is helped by Quilting Arts contributors being a mix of both professionals and home hobby crafters, assisted in this regard by each issue offering opportunities for readers to put their own work forward. Bringing in the expertise of those who are fortunate enough to earn a living doing what they love, and those who are freer to experiment and live out their own style, brings in a wealth of experiences that pull the threads together. Among crafts magazines quilting arts is unique in that it does not suffer at all from a fair blend of basic and advanced quilting & patchwork techniques. It is this balance that makes this title an excellent addition for those into quilting at all levels, or who are looking for a different take from the more plebeian examples available on the mag market.
